Bird photography from your garden

Jackdaw

I mainly do Landscape Images but on really cold days, I enjoy sitting in my hide, in may case, its my garden shed that I have adapted so I can remove the long window pane and sit there poking my camera and long lens out. The windowsill is quite wide, I have fitted a 3/8ths bolt through it, to which I attach my swivelling tripod head on, this revolves smoothly right to left and also tilts upon and down. I can quickly pick up a bird in my view very quickly this way.

Jackdaws in particular are very shy birds and easily scared away by the slightest movement of your lens. I build purpose made natural looking perches and just wait and wait until a bird comes along. To help this happen, I bait a couple of holes with some bread or suet, these are discreetly drilled on the backside of the perch out of camera view.

The above is an example, just an old log fastened the right way up on a post. Try to ensure it’s lined up with a nice background thats well away from the actual perch. This way you will achieve that lovely bokeh.
